A firm in the cellular telephone industry was facing significant competition for the first time since its inception seven years earlier.The firm had begun as an engineering design group and prided itself on its ability to create new, entreprenuerial and interesting designs. This creative mentality was resistant to processes and structures, which meant that individual learning rarely translated into organizational learning.As a result of their success, they were hiring engineers at a fevered pitch, sometimes as many as 30% per year. Few of the newly-hired engineers were trained in the technical skills the organization needed, necessitating in-house training.
We began by getting buy-in to the concept of systemization of routine processes to allow more time for areas requiring creativity. We captured current processes, selected the ones that satisfied the customers best and were most efficient and effective.
